I thought I’d write a post to help people with the garden minigame.

Getting Started

First things first: the garden minigame is similar to other minigames where you need to use a sugar lump to upgrade the building to enable it (in this case, upgrade the farm one level).

Secondly, getting a full garden is much easier when you have a lot of sugar lumps and a good CpS income since you’ll be spending some resources buying plants. So if you’re still in the ramp-up period then you might want to hold off until you have enough income to afford buying plants.

Thirdly, plant costs do increase as you buy subsequent plants and it relates to your CpS. This means that you should make sure that you buy plants when you’re not under any sort of a bonus (ex: Elder Frenzy). However, this also means that if you get a Clot where your CpS is reduced then this also reduces plant prices.

Fourthly, since the idea is to maximize probabilities, having the largest garden is key. This means that you should upgrade your garden to level 9 which will give you a 6×6 grid. That’ll cost 45 sugar lumps. You also need to have 300 farms which will unlock all soil types. Note: levelling to level 10 does nothing but give you the increased CpS and the achievement but your garden size and efficiency is not affected. You don’t have to do all this but it helps.

Now that you have the garden ready, let’s plant. Let’s first reference this image , created by u/_WinterBear to review the mutations. In addition, keep the Wiki page open because it’ll give you maturation times.

General Tips

  • plant either side by side or diagonal but not both
  • plants have a better mutation result when they’re mature and/or when Wood Chips soil type is selected
  • when to use soil types:
  • Dirt: generally useless
  • Fertilizer: great for faster maturation of plants and to get your first weeds
  • Clay: great for maximizing plant life and its effects
  • Pebbles: great if you need to have a lot of plants with negative effects (ex: planting a full garden of Brown Mold which give you -1% CpS)
  • Wood Chips: great for mutations
  • soil types can only change every 10 minutes and you can use a sugar lump once every 10 minutes to reset it.
  • it’s best to start with Fertilizer for faster maturation, then once plants mature, switch to Wood Chips for maximum mutation.
  • new plants are only added to your inventory once they’re mature so don’t harvest a plant too early. A new plant that dies by itself will not be added to your inventory (unless it’s the type of plant that could automatically drop a seed but better be safe than sorry).
  • the garden has a regular «tick» and this is when garden changes are done (i.e. new plants start, plants mature, and old plants die) and the tick is faster or slower depending on soil type (and you can have an artificial tick by using a sugar lump).

Getting Mutations

To start, plant Baker’s Wheat and I prefer the grid instead of the line method. Switch soil type of Fertilizer and once it matures, switch to Wood Chips. You should get Thumbcorn pretty quick. You can now plant Baker’s Wheat and Thumbcorn together but don’t forget that pairing Baker’s Wheat with itself also gives you the Bakeberry (i.e. the best plant in the game). Now you have to pay attention to maturation age because for best results, it’s better for both plants to be mature which will give you higher probabilities of a mutation. Baker’s Wheat has an average of 5 ticks to mature. Thumbcorn is 3. This means that you should plant Baker’s Wheat first, wait 2 ticks, then plant Thumbcorn. That way they’ll both mature at the same time which will give you the best results.

Once you have a new plant type, you can take a few paths. For instance, while you’re waiting for the new plant type to mature, you should try to see if you can reuse the already mature garden. As I said, 2x Baker’s Wheat can still give you another plant so perhaps leave that. Thumbcorn though is useless at this stage and you cannot use it to mutate into another plant. So you can harvest it to clear up the garden space and plant more Baker’s Wheat to increase the possibility of the Bakeberry. That way you’re not wasting any space in the garden and after you have at least 10 seeds, it’s reasonable to have 1-4 new plant types growing in your garden while you resume your experiment for new plants. You don’t have to waste time and feel free to harvest plants you don’t need because freeing up space so you can plant more plants to go after the next plant type will keep you moving along.

Tricky Plants

  • Meddleweed grows by itself and it helps if you use Fertilizer plant type.
  • You can plant a bunch of them and wait until they all mature. Harvesting a bunch of them when they’re mature will basically guarantee you get Brown Mold and Crumbspore
  • Read plant descriptions carefully. Meddleweed, Crumbspore, and Doughshroom will contaminate other crops that are diagonal to them when they’ve matured. I’ve had a new plant that was still growing when a Crumbspore replaced it. Don’t take any chances and harvest these 3 plants if they’re near anything important.
  • I’d save Juicy Queenbeet for last. It’s a huge pain in the ass that needs a lot of garden space to mutate and takes forever to mature. Plus it’s a dead end where it’s not needed for any other plant and it’s the only species in the garden that you cannot plant. Don’t halt your discovery of new plants be hampered by this annoyance which takes literally days to mature.

Most plants are simple where you either plant one or two types and plant the combinations that give you the higher probability of spawning.

There are a 2 types of plants that are not standard: Everdaisy and Juicy Queenbeet. For Everdaisy, simply plant a row of Tidygrass, skip a row, and then plant a row of Elderwort. It doesn’t matter if it’s horizontal of vertical. For Juicy Queenbeet, you need to create a 3×3 box with 8 Queenbeets and leave the central square empty. You can utilize the full garden where you have 4 of these boxes and you’ll very likely get Shriekbulb and Duketater first.

That’s mostly it. To get new plants, just pay attention to the maturation rates (i.e. you might need to plant one plant type and wait potentially hours before planting the next one). You might need to prune your garden since some plants — like Brown Mold — tends to spread White Mildew. This means your garden might not have room for new plant types to grow if the spot is occupied. Then your only job is to make sure the new plants are harvested before they die.

Once you’ve completed the garden and have all 34 plant types, you get an achievement. You also get a Sacrifice Garden option. That option will give you another achievement and 10 sugar lumps but it’ll reset it where you’re back to Baker’s Wheat. Then simply do the same thing and you’re good to go. I’ve sacrificed my garden a few days ago and I already have 32 plants rediscovered.

Now let’s discuss Bakeberry and why it’s the best plant in the game. Bakeberry gives you +1 CpS in general (per plant) so once you have your garden done and it’s cleared, plant the entire 6×6 with 36 Bakeberries. That’s +36% CpS when they’re fully matured which, with Fertilizer, is about an hour and a half. Then make sure you switch to Clay soil type to get another 25% on top of that. Once they’re fully matured — and they all will be if you plant them all at the same time — you can then click on the Harvest All button which will give you +30 minutes of CpS. There’s a restriction of 3% of bank max, so make sure you have a lot of cookies saved up before you pop them. In addition, as stated above, the CpS effects also depend on any other bonuses. For instance, if you have Elder Frenzy and another building-related bonus and then you pop everything, that’s a huge bonus (and even more if you chain other bonuses). Case in point, if you have 700 farms and you have the Elder Frenzy + Ore Vein (7000% increase) and you pop your garden, you get about 50 million times your CpS and you can do this every hour and a half or so and that’s more than a year and a half of idle CpS. I recently popped my garden which gave me about 2 Septendecillion cookies and I make 38.5 Quattuordecillion CpS. Hopefully I didn’t screw up my percentages here.

But what about Queenbeet and Duketater which have a similar harvest bonus option? Well, Queenbeet gives you -2% CpS (and with 36 plants, that’s a huge detriment even with Wood Chips to minimize damage to -18% CpS total). In addition, Queenbeet matures in 64 ticks vs. 32 ticks for Bakeberry so while the bonus is similar (there is a 4% cap with Queenbeet vs. 3% for Bakeberry), it’s simply not worth the lost CpS which would also affect the harvest all results. Duketater takes 201 ticks to mature and it would need to be 128 ticks to be equivalent to Bakeberry or Queenbeet but you’re also back to no CpS bonus that you get with the Bakeberry.

Lastly, as far as cookie drops when you harvest, just max out the garden and harvest when the plants are mature. They’ll eventually drop and you should use Fertilizer to make them mature faster.
